University of New Mexico President Louis Caldera announced that UNM has opened its doors to New Mexico residents enrolled in colleges and universities in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast region.
Caldera issued a memo to faculty yesterday requesting that they accommodate students who wish to enroll at UNM for the fall semester.
“We know that dozens of New Mexico residents have been touched by this tragedy. We are here to help them through this difficult time,” Caldera said. “There is no need for college students to stop-out or fall behind in their coursework this semester,” he said.
Staff moved swiftly to enroll more than a dozen students this week. More are expected to apply, said Terry Babbitt, Admissions and Recruitment Services director.
“It is clear that students and schools are realizing there will be no semester in the New Orleans area. Some students from the universities affected were shipped hundreds of miles away and are now finding their way back to New Mexico,” he said.
The fall semester began Aug. 22. The final day to add classes is Friday. Babbitt said the university would admit and manually register students after the deadline has passed. Most will be temporarily enrolled in non-degree status with the exception of those students who will need immediate financial aid assistance. Students will receive advisement through University College.
UNM faculty in the various degree programs are also willing to personally advise undergraduate and graduate students by phone, email or fax to ease the process.
In addition, approximately 245 students whose original residence is the Gulf Coast region are enrolled at UNM, said Kathleen Sena, registrar. The names were forwarded to the Dean of Students Office. Staff will contact students to offer assistance and counseling, she said.
Students should contact the UNM Admissions Office, 505-277-2447, to enroll.
