The University of New Mexico Water Forum will be held Friday, Sept. 9 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Student Union Building. This collaborative event will provide an opportunity to connect members of the UNM community with others involved in water-related research and creative activities. The forum is sponsored by the UNM Office of the Vice President for Research and Economic Development.
Topics include global climate change; water and health and international development; water and biological sustainability; water and culture and the arts; and water quality.
Estevan Lopez, Director of the New Mexico Interstate Stream Commission, will speak on the New Mexico water plan and state research needs. Erik Webb, Sandia National Laboratories and detailed to the staff of Senator Pete Domenici, will talk about the Department of Energy Water Centers. A panel discussion will feature water leaders and students.
UNM Assistant Vice President for Research and Professor of Civil Engineering Tim J. Ward is the event organizer.
"A better understanding of water and water issues is going to be important not only to the state of New Mexico but also the region and the nation," said Ward. "As a result of forum, we will increase our understanding of the issues and expect to see more collaborations. I believe it is important that the university community and the general public be aware that UNM is paying close attention to important water issues and plans to focus more efforts towards those issues in the future."
