Jean Giraudoux’ “The Madwoman of Chaillot” is a whimsical and poetic parable of the triumph of good over evil, the power of individuality and the folly of greed and war. This classic gem will be presented by UNM’s Department of Theatre and Dance for six performances only in Rodey Theatre at the UNM Center for Fine Arts, Feb. 24 - 25 and March 3 - 4 at 7:30 p.m. and Feb. 26 and March 5 at 2 p.m.
In this timely 1945 satire, “madwoman” Countess Aurelia leads a ragtag group of activists in a crusade against a ruthless president, baron, broker and prospector who conspire to destroy Paris in the name of greed. Aurelia organizes the “mad” street people to take on the evil doers, maintaining that “nothing is ever so wrong in this world that a sensible woman can’t set it right in the course of an afternoon.” This play reminds us that everyone can make a difference and no cause need be helpless.
Director Denise Schulz, head of theatre for the Department of Theatre and Dance, has assembled a company of 24 of UNM’s finest actors, including Merritt Glover as Countess Aurelia. The scenic and lighting design is by award winning UNM faculty member John Malolepsy and costume design is by Dorothy Baca, UNM head of design.
Ticket prices are $15 general admission, $10 faculty and seniors, $8 UNM staff and students. Tickets are available at the UNM Ticket Offices located at the UNM Bookstore or the Arena (the Pit), by calling 925-5858, or online at www.unmtickets.com.
