UNM debaters win national championship

austin_emilyEconomics students Austin Duus and Emily Lappin have won first place in the novice division of the National Parliamentary Debate Association National Tournament in Corvallis, Oregon. More than 350 debate teams from throughout the country entered the tournament.

“It’s a really impressive accomplishment for these students, “said Trey Smith, advisor to the team. “The UNM Debate Team is a student-run organization with limited funds, yet they beat other teams with full time coaching staffs and budgets equaling fifty to sixty thousand dollars a year.”
