A free public reception will be held Friday, Sept. 8, to highlight an exciting new exhibit at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. The event, which will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., will feature images from the Sam L. Slick Collection of Latin American and Iberian Posters. The exhibit is titled “Latin American Posters: Public Aesthetics and Mass Politics."

A free concert the same evening by “Latino Americanto” in the Roy E. Disney Center for Performing Arts will follow the opening. The concert will feature world music from Central and South America.
The posters date from the late 1950s to 2005 and come from a number of Latin American countries. The images represent some of the most dynamic graphic designs from the second half of the 20th century.
UNM Professor of Art History David Craven says, ”Latin America reinvented the poster in the 1960s with remarkable flair as this splendid exhibition makes delightfully clear.”
A 188-page illustrated catalogue of the exhibit, edited by UNM Emeritus Professor and Curator at Latin American Collections Russ Davidson, and published by the Museum of New Mexico Press will be on sale at the NHCC museum shop. The catalogue was made possible by UNM’s Center for Regional Studies (CRS), University Libraries and Lee Blaugrund.
The exhibit was organized by the Visual Arts Program of the National Hispanic Cultural Center and the Center for Southwest Research in University Libraries. The curatorial team included Craven, Davidson, UNM CRS Post Doctoral Fellow Teresa Eckmann, and Director of CSWR Mike Kelly.
