Anderson School Director of Advisement and Programs, Loyola Chastain, points to a number of possible reasons for the increase.

"We know that many of our candidates are seeking to become more competitive in the current job market," said Chastain. "The changes in the CPA requirements also mean that for many accountants, getting a Master of Accounting is now very attractive."

"From our end, we've stepped up our outreach to potential students over the last year through special events and advertising. We've streamlined the application process, both for UNM undergraduates who want to go directly into business school and for candidates returning after several years in the workforce. And we've held special GMAT seminars to help applicants succeed on the Graduate Management Admission Test. The only thing we haven't done is lowered our standards. This is a highly qualified group of students, and we're proud that they chose the Anderson Schools," adds Chastain.

For the last three years (term vs. term):

Spring 2004: 141 applicants and 76 admits.
Spring 2005: 126 applicants and 68 admits.
Spring 2006: 187 applicants and 101 admits.

Summer 2004: 50 applicants and 32 admits.
Summer 2005: 31 applicants and 18 admits.
Summer 2006: 68 applicants and 50 admits.

Fall 2004: 140 applicants and 83 admits.
Fall 2005: 169 applicants and 100 admits.
Fall 2006: 275 applicants and 168 admits.

In addition to the record enrollments in the traditional MBA and Master of Accounting programs, Anderson has increased the number of students in its MBA programs for working professionals by adding a second program, the professional evening MBA, to compliment the executive weekend MBA. In 2006, the two programs combined have admitted an increase of 54 percent over the 2005 executive program alone (86 students in 2006 vs. 56 in 2005).
