Wales Professor to Discuss Women's Suffrage

Angela V. John, honorary professor at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, will give a talk about women’s suffrage on Tuesday, Oct. 24, at 3:30 p.m. in the History department common room, Mesa Vista Hall, 1104.

The departments of History, English, Women's Studies, Feminist Research Institute and College of Arts and Sciences sponsor the presentation, titled, “Words in Deed: Henry W. Nevinson, Evelyn Sharp, and Women’s Suffrage in Britain.”

Known in his day as the “King of Correspondents,” Nevinson (1856-1941) was a campaigning British journalist who combined eyewitness reporting with advocacy for legal and social justice. As a war correspondent, he covered conflicts across the globe and championed the rights of victims and prisoners of war and colonialism. As a political reporter, he described and supported the campaign for women’s suffrage.

Nevinson was married at different times to two leading suffragists, Margaret Nevinson and Evelyn Sharp. This illustrated talk will focus on the roles of H.W. Nevinson and Sharp in the struggle for women’s rights.

John is a fellow of the Royal Historical Society. She is the author of War, Journalism, and the Shaping of the Twentieth Century: The Life and Times of Henry W. Nevinson (2006) and Coalmining Women (1984). She is a co-founder of the international journal, Gender and History.
