UNM Programs to Host 2007 Student Research Symposium

The Initiatives for Minority Student Development (IMSD), Minority Access to Research Careers (MARC) & Post-Baccalaureate Research Education Program (PREP) Programs will host their 2007 Student Research Symposium from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Aug. 9, at the University of New Mexico.

These programs provide biomedical research opportunities to UNM undergraduate students, as they prepare for successful admission to Ph.D. Programs. IMSD and MARC are funded through the National Institute of Health (NIH) and the University of New Mexico Office of Research.

Thirty-two students will present on a wide array of topics including students Antonio Abeyta, who is investigating the role homologous recombination proteins involved in the repair of damaged DNA, genome stabilization and malignant tumor suppression; Alexandria Bachicha who is studying factors affecting predisposition towards Post Traumatic Stress Disorder using a mouse model; Christine Chee, who is investigating the functional genomics of sexual development in the fungus, Neurospora crassa; and Marco Terrezas, who is searching for new antibiotics produced by microorganisms found in the caves of New Mexico.
