Albuquerque Reads Needs Volunteers

Albuquerque Reads is seeking volunteers to tutor incoming kindergarteners at three Albuquerque Public Schools. Volunteers contribute one hour per week to prepare students to enter first grade reading at or above grade level, working one-on-one with the same two students throughout the school year.

Over the last four years, the Albuquerque Reads program has demonstrated success. Following the 2006-2007 school year, test results showed Reads students finishing the year with 81 percent of students reading at or above grade level, compared with 38 percent before the implementation of Albuquerque Reads.

Albuquerque Reads is a partnership between APS and the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce. Contact Nena Perkin at 764-3736 or nperkin@abqchamber.com for information and enrollment forms.
