The 2008 New Mexico Economic Outlook Conference is set for Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2008, at the Embassy Suites Hotel, located just west of Lomas Blvd. NE and I-25, in Albuquerque. Registration and breakfast will be held from 7:30 to 9 a.m., while the conference runs from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. The third annual conference will present a morning devoted to the assessment of and outlook for the United States and New Mexico economies.
Also on the agenda is a presentation on regional economic development. The program is aimed at business owners and executives, as well as economic development and local government officials.
University of New Mexico President David J. Schmidly will open the conference with welcoming remarks. He’ll be followed by the PNM’s annual Forecasting Award presentation by Cindy McGill, vice president, PNM.
Noted conference speakers include Dr. Eugenio Aleman, Senior Economist and Vice-President, Wells Fargo & Company; Dr. Lawrence Waldman, Sr. Economist, UNM’s Bureau of Business and Economic Research (BBER); and Ron Gifford, President and CEO of Indy Partnership, an economic development organization in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Aleman will begin the program, addressing the current condition of the national economy, the housing sector, financial markets and credit, monetary policy and the Federal Reserve, and will offer insight into the current economy, both nationally and internationally.
Following a short break, Dr. Waldman, Senior Economist at UNM’s Bureau of Business and Economic Research (BBER), will discuss recent developments in and outlook for the New Mexico economy.
Gifford will close the program with the presentation of a model of cooperative regional economic development, which has been quite successful as applied in a ten-county partnership in Central Indiana.
