UNM Undertaking Survey of "Chemicals of Interest"

chemicalsUNM researchers and staff are undertaking a survey of “Chemicals of Interest” as part of a mandate for all colleges and universities by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The survey requires that anyone possessing specific chemicals throughout the university and satellite campuses identify the amounts and location of more than 300 specific chemicals that may be stored on UNM property.

The survey must be complete by Jan. 25. These are new requirements, says Lowell D. White, manager of chemical hygiene in the Safety and Risk Services Department of UNM.

He notes that it is important that the surveys are completed promptly because fines for non-compliance can be as much as $25,000 a day for each location at UNM. The new requirements are part of the nationwide Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Standards which require colleges and universities to report the possession of quantities of chemicals that may be used in acts of terrorism.

Anyone interested in seeing a complete list of the “Chemicals of Interest” or may find them here. In addition, information about the requirements can be found here.
