Scholarship to benefit non-traditional student
A new endowed scholarship, titled ‘The Arthur, Martha and Alice York Endowed Scholarship at the University of New Mexico,’ that provides full tuition for a non-traditional student, was established recently announced the UNM Development/Foundation office. The gift of $85,000 establishes the endowed scholarship that will provide full tuition for a student who has been away from college or out of high school for five years or more and who doesn’t qualify for a New Mexico Lottery Scholarship.
A Massachusetts native, Arthur York attended UNM as a young adult in 1948. However, he was based on a ship during his enlistment in the Navy and was often gone. After retiring from the Navy, he and his wife, the former Martha McGann, a native of Newport, Rhode Island, chose Albuquerque as a location for their family because of the availability of a strong public university here. He went on to finish his degree at UNM as a non-traditional student in math in 1966.
The Yorks, who have had a strong commitment to education over the years, sent all four of their daughters to UNM. Each daughter earned an undergraduate degree at UNM, and also went on to earn an advanced degree.
“There was never any discussion about whether we would attend college or not – it was an expectation,” the York daughters commented.
To qualify for The Arthur, Martha and Alice York Endowed Scholarship, a prospective student must be enrolled full time, have completed at least one semester at UNM and hold a UNM cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher. The scholarship, which also bears the name of Arthur’s late sister Alice, can be awarded to the same student for up to four years provided the student continues to meet the criteria of the scholarship. Alice York was a native of Newburyport, Massachusetts and lived there until her death in 2007.
Students interested in the scholarship, should visit the Web site of the UNM Scholarship Office, review the criteria on the “Bulletin Board” section and then complete the scholarship application available at the site if they meet the criteria for the scholarship.
In order to develop private financial support for the University of New Mexico, the University's Board of Regents established the UNM Foundation Inc. in 1979. The Foundation began operations in the spring of 1980.
In accordance with University policy, all private gifts are received through the Foundation, which has the responsibility for managing contributions to all UNM programs. Gifts to the UNM Foundation are tax-deductible. For more information visit: UNM Foundation.
