An exhibit and lecture at Zimmerman Library will explore New Mexico’s history as a health destination in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The lecture titled “Seekers and Sanatoriums: Chasing the Cure in New Mexico,” will be presented by Nancy Owen-Lewis, Ph.D. on Friday Feb. 8, 2008 at 2 p.m. in the Willard Room in the Center for Southwest Research at Zimmerman Library.
Owen-Lewis is a fellow with the Office of the State Historian Scholars Program. Her research is funded by the Office of the State Historian.
An exhibit “In the Heart of Well Country,” presented by the John Gaw Meem Archives of Southwestern Architecture at the Center for Southwest Research will open on the same day in the west wing of Zimmerman Library.
The exhibit is curated by Audra Bellmore, curator of the John Gaw Meem Archives of Southwestern Architecture in the CSWR. She worked with Jane Sinclair, Julie McGilvray and Ramona Caplan who served as research and exhibition assistants.
The exhibit explores aspects of the history of tuberculosis sanitariums in New Mexico, and will be on display through March 31, 2008. Both the exhibit and lecture are free and open to the public.
