The UNM Women’s basketball team is one of 600 basketball teams nationwide that will participate in the 2008 Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Think Pink initiative. On. Wednesday, Feb. 13, the UNM women's game against San Diego State will feature players, coaches and game officials in pink, referees blowing pink whistles and giveaways. Game time is 7 p.m. at The Pit.
High school, college and semi-professional women’s teams are dedicating basketball games and activities during the month of February to educate women about breast cancer and raise money for breast cancer research.
Breast cancer facts and information will be presented throughout the game. Organizers would love to have a "pink out" in the gym, so please wear pink to the game.
At half time, UNM Cancer Center officials will honor breast cancer survivors and donors who have funded breast cancer research. UNM President David Schmidly and former Lady Lobo assistant coach Hazel Tull-Leach will have a basketball shooting contest to raise money for breast cancer research.
The UNM Cancer Center is on the leading edge of breast cancer research. Last year, UNM Cancer Center scientists discovered a new estrogen receptor that is dramatically changing the way breast and other estrogen cancers are treated.
The New Mexico Tumor Registry is gathering breast tissue samples from every New Mexican with breast cancer for diagnosis and study. And dozens of breast cancer clinic trials are conducted every day at the UNM Cancer Center, bringing the latest in breast cancer drugs and treatments to our patients.
