International Studies Institute Presents ‘Global Instability: Causes, Consequences, and Cures’

ISS_GlobalUNM's International Studies Institute presents “Global Instability: Causes, Consequences, and Cures” Monday, Oct. 20-Thursday, Oct. 23. Distinguished speakers with diverse areas of expertise will analyze global instability against the backdrop of the current financial crisis and other recent events that are contributing to a growing sense of insecurity around the world.

Economist Loretta Napoleoni will give the keynote address on “The Global Financial Crisis” on Monday, Oct. 20 at 5:30 p.m. in Student Union Building Ballroom B. Napoleoni is a senior partner of G Risk, a London-based risk agency. She is the author of “Rogue Economics: Capitalism’s New Reality,” “Terror Incorporated” and “Insurgent Iraq.” She is an expert on the financing of terrorism and advises several governments on counter-terrorism.

Additional lectures will be held at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 21-Thursday, Oct. 23 in Mitchell Hall room 122. The schedule is:


  • Tuesday, 5 p.m.: “Trade and Labor Standards: A New Approach to an Old Debate,” Andrew Schrank, associate professor, UNM Department of Sociology
  • Tuesday, 7 p.m.: “The Subprime Mortgage Crisis: Code, Crash, & Open Source,” Erik Gerding, assistant professor, UNM School of Law
  • Wednesday, 5 p.m.: “Credit Crunch: Observations from Wall Street’s Front Line,” Eric R. Carlson, UNM alumnus, senior associate, UBS Investment Bank
  • Wednesday, 7 p.m.: “A Global Perspective on Energy Security and Climate Change,” Arnold B. Baker, chief economist, Sandia National Laboratories
  • Thursday, 5 p.m.: “The U.S. Elections and the War in Iraq,” Mark Peceny, professor and chair, UNM Department of Political Science
  • Thursday, 7 p.m.: “The Caucasus Conflict and the Role of the Media,” Marta Dyczok, associate professor, University of Western Ontario Departments of History and Political Science

ISI is an umbrella organization for the three area studies undergraduate programs in the College of Arts and Sciences, European Studies, Asian Studies (including the Middle East) and Russian Studies. ISI’s primary goal is to provide opportunities for the dissemination of knowledge about all parts of the world on the UNM campus and throughout the state.
