The University of New Mexico will test new emergency alert sirens on Monday, Feb. 9, at 11:02 a.m. The sirens, located on the main campus and at University Stadium will be sounded for one minute. Shortly after the first siren, there will be a different sound to indicate All Clear. The sirens mean anyone on the campus should immediately seek shelter inside the nearest building.
The sirens will only be sounded in the event of an emergency that makes it dangerous to be outdoors, such as a severe lightning storm, an environmental hazard, or a threat from an armed individual. During a real alert, people who are not on campus and hear the siren should not come on campus.
During the test, students are asked to proceed to class as usual. Students who have signed up will receive a text message. If you wish to sign up visit: TextMe Alert
During a normal day, there are many people on campus who are not part of the university’s current text message and email emergency notification system. The sirens supplement that notification.
UNM Emergency Operations Manager Byron Piatt says, “We want to urge people living near campus to pay special attention to their pets, and put them inside if possible. These sirens are extremely loud.”
