Last month, KUNM (89.9) began the nomination phase for KUNM Radio Board elections. Four seats were to be filled in the election. UNM's Office of the Secretary received only three nominations for the four open seats.
UNM's Office of the Provost is responsible for managing the elections for the institution. The Office of the Provost has decided to invite the three nominees to be seated on the Radio Board starting in May, rather than going through a balloting procedure.
Here are the three nominations:
1. Graham J. Sharman -- Santa Fe
Sharman was born in England in 1938, and educated at Oxford University and Harvard Business School. He spent 10 years as a project engineer in London and New York. After business school he spent more than 30 years with the business consultancy McKinsey in Toronto, New York, Amsterdam and Dallas, before retiring to Santa Fe. He has taught operations management part-time at a university in Holland for several years. He has served as board member at two global companies and a Fulbright Center.
He said, “As an enthusiastic listener and supporter to KUNM, I would like to contribute as a board member to KUNM’s future. Maintaining and growing public radio’s role and contribution has never been more important in an age when other quality news channels like newspapers are under threat. I hope that my business problem solving experience, combined with service on several boards, will enable me to add value at KUNM.”
2. Nathan James -- Bernalillo
James is president of Fishbone Marketing in Albuquerque and serves organizations such as the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, the Museum of New Mexico Foundation and the Santa Fe Opera. A 26-year communications industry veteran, James has worked as a magazine staff writer, investigative journalist, editor, and award-winning marketer for nonprofit organizations. He holds a master’s in fine arts from Columbia University.
He said, “I began listening to public radio in high school. That began my passionate concern for public discourse in America. What we say to each other matters. What KUNM says to 112,000 listeners each week matters even more. Public radio is a national resource. As media consolidation prevents many Americans from being heard, public radio may be the last, best hope for citizen dialog. I want to protect that. I want to give back.”
3. Robert F. Gish -- Albuquerque
Gish is a three-time alumnus of the University of New Mexico, having earned bachelor’s, master’s and Ph.D. at UNM, plus being the recipient of UNM’s Erna Fergusson Award for distinguished service. He has held university professorships and administrative positions at Cal Poly and the University of Northern Iowa, where he holds titles as emeritus professor and University Distinguished Scholar. His local board experience includes: New Mexico Jazz Workshop, New Mexico Humanities Council, and La Luz Land Owners Association.
He said, “I am a strong advocate for both public radio and UNM and their mutually compatible association. Program planning and fund raising are two particular interests.”
The KUNM Radio Board normally meets the first Tuesday of every month, from 6 – 8 p.m. in Room 100 of Scholes Hall (near the Duck Pond) on the UNM campus. The public is welcome to attend and speak with members of the Radio Board during the Open Mic portion of the agenda. More information is available at www.kunm.org
