Dr. Patricia Hill Collins, Distinguished University Professor of Sociology at the University of Maryland, wil present a keynote address titled, 'Answering the call to service: Youth, Inequality and the Obama Phenomenon,' Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. in the SUB Ballrooms A&B.

Collins, who is also the Charles Phelps Taft Emeritus Professor of Sociology within the Department of African American Studies at the University of Cincinnati, has taught at several institutions, held editorial positions with professional journals, lectured widely in the United States and abroad, served in many capacities in professional organizations, and has acted as consultant for a number of community organizations.
In 2008, she became the 100th President of the American Sociological Association, the first African American woman elected to this position in the organization’s 104-year history. Her newest book, Another Kind of Public Education: Race, Schools, the Media, and Democratic Possibilities is currently in production and will be published by Beacon Press in spring 2009.
A few of Professor Collins books include Black Feminist Thought: Knowledge, Consciousness, and the Politics of Empowerment (1990, 2000) winner of the Jessie Bernard Award of the American Sociological Association (ASA), and the C. Wright Mills Award of the Society for the Study of Social Problems; Black Sexual Politics: African Americans, Gender, and the New Racism (Routledge, 2004), recipient of ASA’s 2007 Distinguished Publication Award.
