UNM Staff Council’s Work+Life Committee is collecting items for the Animal Humane Association and City of Albuquerque Animal Welfare Department through Friday, Dec. 11. Agencies are requesting specific items limited to: Peanut butter, bleach, milk bones (all sizes), cat treats, kitty litter, canned kitten or cat food, new washable cat toys or Kong label dog toys.
“Research shows that owning a pet helps people lead healthier lives reducing stress and encouraging exercise,” said Kathy Meadows, UNM staff. “Unfortunately, a growing number of pet owners are surrendering their animals to agencies due to the economic downturn. Not everyone is able to adopt, but our committee is providing a way to donate to shelters to ensure homeless animals are cared for and to fill an unmet need this holiday season.”
