UNM Celebrates First Official Ring Ceremony

UNM will hold its first official ring ceremony on Tuesday, Dec. 1 at 6 p.m. in Ballroom C of the Student Union Building. Ninety two students will receive their rings.

Karen Abraham, associate vice president of Alumni Relations will give opening remarks, and UNM student regent Cate Wisdom and Young Alumni Board President Misty Salaz will give an overview of the ring symbolism and tradition. Vice President of Student Affairs, Eliseo “Cheo” Torres will present the ring to individual students.

This is the first year UNM has held a ring ceremony. “Now that UNM has an official ring, I am very pleased and excited we have this new tradition to build on,” said Joshua Gallegos, Executive Director of ASUNM Lobo Spirit.

At the ceremony students will participate in a “Ring Dip.” Ring recipients will dip their hand into a bowl of red dye to signify their Lobo spirit. Those students will receive discounts on the following day at area UNM businesses. The ring recipients and their families are invited to a reception immediately following the ceremony.

Students must have 60 credit hours towards a bachelor’s degree before ordering a ring. Owning a UNM class ring is a way for students and alumni to show their pride for the University and commemorate their college years. The ring ceremony will occur near the end of every fall and spring semester at UNM.
