Jeffrey Hanson Talks on Recovery and Burial of Three Buffalo Soldiers

Fort CraigOn Wednesday, Dec. 9, Jeffrey Hanson, with Statistical Research, Inc. will speak on “From Unknown to Known: the identification of the remains of three Buffalo Soldiers from the Fort Craig Cemetery, Socorro County, New Mexico” at 4 p.m. in Room 105 of the Hibben Center at UNM.

His talk will detail a two-year investigation conducted by federal agents from the Bureau of Land Management into the removal of human remains from the Ft. Craig cemetery. Sixty-four remains were recovered and the entire cemetery was mitigated during an archaeological excavation. Three African-American soldiers were identified through the use of forensic and archival data.

Hanson will describe the history of the project and explain how the identifications were made. The remains were reburied at the Santa Fe National Cemetery earlier this year.
