 Cog Rattle  (68.59.58)
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Idiophone

Spinning the rattle around on the handle causes a flat piece of wood to click across the cog wheel, making the rattle’s unique sound. This cog rattle was used in the 19th century by night watchmen as a signal.  Other European cog rattles are used in ceremonies, festivities, or public events as noisemakers.
