Winnebago Flute (80.51.30)
United States
Aerophone

Flutes play special roles in Native American music.  Some flutes are simple whistles made from hollowed out bones, while others are elaborately carved or decorated flutes made from wood.  As all of the flutes are hand crafted, no two flutes are alike.  This example has an animal hoof carved into the end.

The Winnebago are found throughout the Western Great Lakes area, including Iowa, Minnesota, Michigan and Wisconsin.
