For centuries, people have been predicting the weather by studying the sky and the clouds. However, it was not until 1803, when English pharmacist and amateur meteorologist Luke Howard wrote, On the Modifications of Clouds, in which he classified and named clouds. Howard's simple classification system is still widely used today.
