The Institute for Medieval Studies prides itself on offering internationally recognized civic and university events that have broad appeal and are free and open to the public. The Spring Lecture Series has, for nearly thirty years, drawn many hundreds of audience members who look forward each year to a four-day event that is focused on a specific medieval theme. The Institute’s occasional Weekend Colloquia on Medieval Science and Medicine are another popular series that addresses medieval contributions to the development of scientific and medical knowledge. To offer its programs, the Institute depends upon the generous financial support of units across the UNM campus as well the general public.
Friends of Medieval Studies is the organization through which the public may support the Institute. In addition to receiving information about the Spring Lecture Series and the Colloquia, Friends of Medieval Studies are invited to the opening reception of the Spring Lecture Series each year; they receive invitations to the lunchtime meetings of the Medieval Work in Progress Seminar held once or twice each semester; and they are honored annually at the Holiday Reception for Friends of Medieval Studies, an event held each December that includes a lecture or concert as part of the program.
Basic membership of Friends of Medieval Studies is available to individuals for $25, to families for $40, and to students for $10. Those who would like to contribute more may join one of the special circles of membership: Beowulf Circle ($75), Heloise Circle ($100), Chaucer Circle ($250), Hildegard Circle ($500), Francis of Assisi Circle ($1,000), and Beatrice Circle ($1,500).
