English 100-Lab / Fragments #1

1Identify the fragment in the selections below:
The sunflowers in the yard are huge.
Some are ten feet tall.
Probably because they get so much water.
The birds come and eat the seed in the fall.

2Mark the fragment below.
Leo has always wanted to travel.
Almost anywhere is fine with him.
As long as there is some adventure and new sites to see.
Last year he went to Spain.

3Find the fragment.
For his next adventure, Leo wants to go to Tibet.
This trip will be difficult.
Because access into Tibet is limited.
Still, Leo hopes he will gaze upon the beauty of Tibet's mountains one day.

4Find the fragment below.
It is the year 2050.
You want to buy new shoes.
Instead of walking into a store filled with shoes to try on.
You walk into a room filled with electronic equipment.

5Find the fragment.
In Leo's lifetime, technology has really changed.
He remembers when there was no television.
Kids played outside or played board games.
Reading books and playing with toy cars and dolls and jacks and balls.

6Find the fragment.
Leo thinks that kids today may have lost a few skills because of technology.
Because kids don't have to use their imagination as much to be entertained.
TV is an instant entertainment.
Watching people replaces going out and doing things with people.

7Find the fragment.
Leo thinks that TV has too many commercials.
Making people want things that won't truly satisfy them.
New clothes, sexy shampoo, and cleaning products don't bring real happiness.
The commercials make happiness equal to pretty hair, the right shoes, and a sparkling floor.

8Find the fragment.
Loe notices that kids want to eat at fast food restaurants.
Mainly because of the toys offered rather than the food.
The kids enjoy the toys for a short time.
Leo remembers when getting a toy was a big deal.

9Find the fragment.
Leo notices too that most beer commercials feature beautiful women.
As if drinking a certain kind of beer makes a man more attractive to women.
Leo often wonders which beer works best.
He thinks that maybe the woman would have to drink the beer in order for the process to work for him.

10Find the fragment.
This past summer, Leo went on vacation.
He went to the mountains in Northern, New Mexico.
He had a wonderful time.
Camping and hiking and enjoying the stars at night.

11Find the fragment.
Leo did not see anyone else in the mountains for a week.
It was very quiet there.
Not even airplanes or cars.
At first it seemed too quiet.

12Find the fragment.
After a day or two, Leo could hear himself think.
All the noise that filled his head was gone.
Even though once in a while a silly jingle from the TV broke the quiet thoughts.
Leo enoyed the solitude.

13Find the fragment.
Every noise was amplified.
After Leo returned home from his quiet vacation.
The cars were louder and the TV seemed like an irritating guest.
He didn't turn it on for weeks.

14Find the fragment.
Leo vowed not to turn on the TV.
Unless, of course, there was something special on that he wanted to watch.
Sometimes he liked to watch a good movie or sporting event.
Still, he had problems turning off the TV after the program was over.

15Find the fragment.
Leo realized that for him TV was like an addiction.
Gazing at the TV calmed him and made the hours pass quickly.
He could spend hours watching TV.
Until he became tired and knew that he needed to go to bed.
