Texts and Materials

Course Description

English 101: Expository Writing is designed to introduce you to writing academic expository essays and analytical reading, so we will spend the semester learning the writing process including invention, composition, arrangement and editing as well as peer editing and minor punctuation/grammar skills.

Since these skills can be improved only through practic, be prepared to write, write, write. Also, since we are in the computer classroom, this class functions best if thought of as a workshop, not a series of lectures; hence your participation and contributions to the class are vital. For more information see FE at UNM Handbook.

Attendance

Being absent does not absolve you from the responsibility for the work due or assigned in that class, so I suggest that you exchange telephone numbers with someone to find out what work is due for the next meeting. According to UNM policy, you will be dropped after your fourth absence.

Grades

Final course grades will be based on the following:

60% Essays
20% Presentation & Workshop Participation
20% Final Exam

Assignments

Essays: We will write roughly 5-6 major essays. In class essays must be written in a blue book. Out of class papers must be double spaced, with one inch margins. Please include your name, my name, course number and section and date in the upper right hand corner of the first page. Your last name and page number should appear in the top, right hand corner on subsequent pages.

Research Project/Oral Presentation: You will also be required to do one presentation with handout on a class reading. Two students will be assigned to each essay we read; each will be required to fulfill the research component of the course by locating two sources on either the reading or the author and incorporating abstracts of these articles in the hand-out. In effect, you will ̉teachÓ the essay to the class and me.

Cover Memo: With each of the 3-4 out of class essays, you will be required to hand in a cover memo answering questions (regarding your concerns, triumphs, etc with the paper) I provide with the essay assignment. I will demonstrate memo format during the second class meeting.

Late Papers

I accept late papers only in extreme extenuating circumstances.
