Assignment 5

1. For this assignment, I used ArcView 8x toolbar in ArcCatalog to
import three interchange files of the Pecos River system.
2. I added this data to a new map, then utilized the Query Builder to
select the Pecos Headwaters Hydrologic Unit (HUC# 13060001). Then I
exported that data to a new shapefile, and added as a layer to the map.
3. Using the Select by Location menu option under the Selection menu, I
highlighted the Pecos River.
4. I obtained data on stream gauges in the Pecos Headwaters from http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nm/nwis/sw,
and pasted it into an Excel spreadsheet. Data included the
site identification number, site name, and the latitude, longitude, and
altitude of the station.
5. In order to be able to import the table into ArcGis, I cleaned it up
and saved it as a DBF4 file. Then I added the .dbf to the map.
6. Because the gauges were not in the same projection as the underlying
layers, they were not located along the river at first. This was
corrected by utilizing the ArcToolbox to project the stream gauge layer
in US Albers Equal Area Conic.
7. Finally, I added labels to the gauging stations, and changed the
size of the Pecos River and the location of the labels so the gauging
station names would be clearly visible.
