Mission
The primary purpose
of the Division of Arthropods is to provide long-term safe storage facilities
for arthropod specimens representing the American Southwest and northern Mexico,
with a special emphasis on arthropods from the state of New Mexico. Those arthropod
specimens are maintained in the Arthropod Collection. All of those arthropod
specimens will eventually be included into a computer database, which will provide
information on taxonomic holdings, as well as other information associated with
each specimen such as locality, collection date, host data, and other information.
The Division of Arthropods provides facilities and work space for research systematists,
taxonomists, and ecologists to conduct research activities oriented toward Southwestern
arthropods. Special voucher specimen collections are maintained for ongoing
systematic and ecological research. Research collections are primarily limited
to the Southwest region, but UNM researchers may also maintain voucher reference
collections for research projects outside of the region. The Division of Arthropods
collection does not routinely accession specimens from outside of the Southwest
region. The Division of Arthropods also provides a facility for educational
purposes, and arthropod expert personnel who provide information about arthropods
for the university community, and for outside public groups and individuals.
