Assignment 5 - River, reservoirs, and stream gages of the Pecos headwaters

Procedure: The purpose of the assignment was to familiarize ourselves with the hydrologic unit codes. In ArcGIS the United States can easily be divided into regions, sub-regions, accounting units, and cataloging units based on hydrologic system. Hydrologic unit codes are identified by two to eight digits based on the levels of classification in the system.

The first step in the assignment was retrieving data from the cegis account in the FTP account. ArcToolbox was needed to display the files in ArcMap. I then played with the streams, reservoirs, and HUC files that were imported into ArcMap to display and better understand the assignment.

After displaying what I wanted I then used the Query builder tool to select a feature in the map. The feature selected was the Pecos Headwaters. To display the gages of the Pecos headwaters I had to go to the USGS website to retrieve the data. I then copied and pasted the data in excel and saved all data as a DF4. The entire procedure can be found in the tutorial for the assignment. I then displayed the excel files by clicking on the source tab of the table of content in ArcMap and clicking on the Display XY Data. After all gages were imported I displayed the following maps.

I had fun with this assignment but had a little trouble displaying the excel files. I had no idea that the program had to be shut down so the files can be displayed in ArcMap.
