The first Miss Indian University of New Mexico pageant was held at the University of New Mexico in 1982. Miss Indian UNM serves as a goodwill ambassador for the Native American student population at the University of New Mexico and attends numerous activities at UNM as well as in the local, state, and national communities.

On April 25, 2005 the Miss Indian UNM 2005 pageant was held in the UNM Student Union Building. The pageant, hosted by flute artist Andrew Thomas of the Navajo/Diné Nation, allowed five contestants from various tribes to vie for the title. The competition included contemporary and traditional talent showcases and an impromptu question. At the conclusion of the evening Jackie Walker from the Pueblo of Cochiti was crowned Miss Indian UNM 2005.

A few of Miss Indian UNM’s annual duties following her crowning include hosting the Miss Indian World candidate’s luncheon, attending the Gathering of Nations Powwow, speaking at American Indian Student Day, and taking part in KIVA Club’s annual “Nizhoni Days” held every April; including planning the following year’s Miss Indian UNM pageant. Miss Indian UNM is also an executive officer of KIVA Club.

Upon her crowning, Miss Indian UNM received a scholarship provided by American Indian Student Services, a hand beaded crown to use during her reign, a personalized woven sash, and numerous gifts courtesy of KIVA Club and other student organizations.
