Article:  Taking advantage of his leading man years

Since in the world of telenovelas there exists a marked tendency to bestow the leading roles to young actors, Miguel de León is determined to take maximum advantage of his last remaining years as a leading man.

Even though he's still a couple of years away from reaching forty, the actor, who plays the role of "Luciano" in "Carita de Ángel", will take advantage of all the opportunities that come his way before he becomes encased as a mature actor.

The curious part is, even though he counts with a twenty-ish physique, Venezuelan actress Gabriela Spanic's husband is not inclined to show off and display his body to the television viewers because, in his own words, "that's not my style".

"My line is not showing off my physique.  However, I am conscious that if you don't have a good presence in this medium, you can't participate in some projects because this career has the particularity of selling a certain beauty.

"People have to be esthetically-pleasing to be able to be here.  If you're not, they hire you to develop comic characters,"
he added, "or else, if you're over forty, they offer you roles where you don't need to take care of your physical appearance."

During the interview, the Venezuelan actor commented he manages a protagonist or a first-actor image so when the moment arrives that he's asked to interpret other types of roles, the change won't be drastic.

"I'm confronting this, not as a person who has a good physique and when the moment arrives, he changes his form [of being]," he signaled, "rather I try to maintain an intermediary line that will allow me to take that step with tranquility."

Miguel de León accepted to participate in Nicandro Díaz's production because he felt it was a children's telenovela where not only the children but also the adult actors interpret weighty characters.

"I've seen many children's novelas where the presence/importance of the adult people that appear in them is not as strong as it is in this story.  In this project, on the other hand, the adult actors as much as the child, are the stars.

"I also accepted because of the great variety of facets the character has,"
signaled the actor, "In fact, I could say it's the most complete [character] I've interpreted throughout my artistic career because it borders on the dramatic, the tragic and the comic."

Did you [ever] imagine this opportunity?
No, but thank God it came to be.  The truth is, I was feeling somewhat down before this offer because I had realized several auditions and I had come up empty-handed.  In fact, I was seriously thinking about accepting some projects outside of Mexico.

Which telenovelas did you try out for?
One of the last auditions I took part in was for "Amigos por siempre" (Friends Forever); but I really can't complain because the person that landed the role (Ernesto Laguardia) really deserved it.

In that moment of crisis, were you thinking of returning to Venezuela?
If it had been necessary, yes.

Without it mattering that Gabriela would remain in Mexico?
Well, before doing anything we would have tried planning things out very well so that our work commitments wouldn't overlap and so we'd have an opportunity to be close.

Would you like to work alongside Gabriela?
Of course I would love working with Gaby, but we can see it's a bit difficult because many producers in this medium feel the magic transmitted is not the same when a real-life couple star in a telenovela.

When will you be writing to the stork?
Within a year and a half because Gaby is starting a project in August and the filming is going to last till next year.
