The "bearer service" is the basic information transport interface for wide area communications, analogous to layer 3 in the ISO network model.
One of the greatest strengths of the existing Internet is the ability of any node to communicate with any other node in a compatible transport format.
In Internet 2 this strength must be preserved to the extent possible.
