Provide 10/100Mbps switched environment to the desktop
Provide a resilient (fault tolerant) Gigabit Ethernet Backbone
Replace electronics every 5 years
Departments with requirements beyond this standard should work with CIRT for network design and acquiring funds.
IP Only Backbone
To take advantage of the new technology and higher speeds, such as Gigabit Ethernet, applications which run on UNM's Network will be required to be IP based. The industry as a whole is moving in this direction as well.
Non-standard and proprietary protocols such as,
IPX and Appletalk, will continue to work at slower speeds using legacy technologies. These protocols will not be routed on UNM's backbone by the year 2002.
Departments are strongly encouraged to begin migration from these proprietary protocols towards the IP standard today. Apple and Novell have products available that use IP as the transportation protocol.
