- synchronize frame with each station’s clock
- repeating stations may change length of the field as per clocking requirements
Starting Delimiter (SD): 8 bits
- indicates beginning of a frame;
- coded as JK where J and K are non-data symbols; J same polarity as preceding symbol, K opposite polarity
