Analog loop (local loop)
- “Last mile” voice-grade line from the central office to the customer’s premises
Pulse Code Modulation (PCM)
- The most common and most important method a telephone system in North America can use to sample a voice signal (analog) and convert that sample into an equivalent digital code (An A/D or D/A converter , CODEC)
- An electronic circuit that converts audio (analog) into digital code (and vice versa) using techniques such as pulse code modulation
