• The network topology defines the manner in which devices within buildings and among buildings are interconnected.

• The topology is a function of a number of variables including :

  • The architecture and protocols used (eg. Ethernet, FDDI, Token ring).
  • The transmission media used and their distance limitations.
  • The type, number and location of devices in buildings.
