2007 Awards
Graduate Students
Richard Smrt, a Zhao Lab graduate student, won second place in the category "Confocal,
single plane, three channel image" in the Microscopy Facility
Imaging Competition. Awards were given out on Tuesday, January 30th
2007. The image was then published in the Pathology newsletter.
Undergraduate Students
Nick Santistevan, a Zhao Lab ungraduate student, won a $300 prize in the 2007 Undergraduate
Symposium at UNM for his poster presentation, "MeCP2 is an
epigenetic regulator critical to neuronal maturation in brain development.”
Nick was accepted by the MARC program last fall and was recently
awarded a full fellowship to do summer research at UCSF this summer.
2008 Awards
Postdoctoral Fellows
Xuekun Li, a Zhao Lab post doc, recieved a travel award for 2008 ISSCR meeting
his was also selected for platform presentation (49 out of 1300 abstracts selected)
Graduate Students
Basam Barkho, a Zhao Lab graduate student, recieved the American Heart Association (AHA) - Pacific Mountain Affiliate Pre-doctoral Fellowship, January 2008-December 2009, $24,000 per year. He also recieved a BSGP Travel award ($600) to attend the 2008 ISSCR annual meeting.

Imaging Competition, 1st Place: Widefield Fluorescence, 1st Place: Confocal Z-series, single channel (single-image projection), 2nd Place: Confocal Z-series, two channels (single-image projection), 1st Place: Confocal Z-series, three channels (single-image projection), 2nd Place: Confocal Single Plane, three fluorescence channels. Ari Munoz, a Zhao Lab ungraduate student, won a $300 prize in the 2008 Undergraduate
Symposium at UNM for his poster presentation, "Matrix metalloproteinases and Adult Neural Stem Cell migration in response to ischemia-induced chemokines.".
