Large nerve fibers are covered with a thin coat of myelin, which is made up largely of fat.  This coating insulates the nerve fibers and helps them conduct impulses at a rapid rate by a process called saltatory conduction.  Multiple sclerosis is a disease caused by the destruction of myelin.
