Message from the President, Janel Ryan, Superintendent, Farmington Municipal Schools

August 2009

In 1993-94 I served as president of the Superintendent’s Association and am honored to once again serve in this capacity for the 2009-10 school year. A superintendent, be the district large or small, has the same responsibilities and burdens to provide the best learning environments for students. All across New Mexico superintendents are looking at test scores and ratings. They are pulling together their administrators and establishing goals and direction and ensuring the tools are in place to keep things moving, be it facility improvement, teachers for classrooms, coaches for sports or interventions for the individual students. We assume this position because we care about students, we care about education and we believe in what we are doing for our community’s leaders of tomorrow. We need the communication and support from each other and we are blessed to have a good organization for superintendents and the Coalition for all administrators in the state. These are difficult times with the economy as such and the future not looking any more promising. It is the time when we need to rely on each other. Provide dialog with those superintendents selected for committees that represent us, whether it is the Legislative Committee, the NMAA, rural schools, large schools, REC Board of Directors, CES Board of Directors, Secretary Garcia’s Council, NMPSIA Board or any other group I have neglected to mention. All of us can play a role in keeping us united and moving forward in the budget crunches we are facing and the future of excellent education in New Mexico. If at any time I can be of service to any of you, feel free to contact me through email at jryan@fms.k12.nm.us or my cell phone 505-330-3695 or my office telephone of 505-324-9840 ext.1503.

May each of you have a good year.

Janel M. Ryan
Superintendent
Farmington Municipal Schools
