Dear Editor,

As we move toward the end of another spring semester, the opportunity to return to Latin America draws near.  Some thoughts regarding this annual exodus to places south have prompted me to write this letter, which is more a reminder to myself than to anyone else.  As academics, we sometimes get caught up in viewing Latin America as a place where we can prove our hypotheses.  The tendency seems to lean towards regarding our neighbors as test subjects whose lives, histories, political systems, ecosystems and institutions are there for our use.  Perhaps we should keep in mind that this summer we will again be guests in our neighbors' houses and we should treat it as such.  additionally, when we return from our journeys, we should do our best to make those who have decided to visit our homes, be it for research or to stay, feel as welcome as our neighbors did for us. Academic study carries with it a responsibility not only to do our best work possible, but also to try and give back to those who have given us so much. I hope everyone has a wonderful and fruitful summer.

The Idea of the Icon:
The Retablo Collection at New Mexico State University

The University Art Gallery at New Mexico State University houses one of the largest collections of retablos in North America. Only a small selection of the University's 1,743 retablos are currently on-line. The Idea of the Icon is a collaboration between the Computing Research Laboratory and The Department of Art at New Mexico State University, and is part of an ongoing effort to make the cultural resources of southern New Mexico available to scholars and the public.
