Alexander Kurota - (BA, Teacher Training/English, University of Constantin the Philosopher, Slovakia; MA - Anthropology, Wichita State University)

Native of Nitra, Slovakia, Alex Kurota has 11 years of experience in supervising and participating on archeological projects in Arizona, New Mexico, Kansas, and Texas panhandle. Such projects include excavations at Francisco Vasquez de Coronado’s Jimmy Owens site in Texas, as well as digs in Arizona’s Tonto, Tucson and Phoenix Basins, the Long House Valley, and on the Tohono O’odhaam Reservation. In New Mexico, Alex has excavated on La Bajada Mesa, in Albuquerque, Alamogordo, at Fort Wingate, near Roswell, in the Las Cruces area and in the Fence Lake region. Kurota has conducted surveys in most regions of New Mexico as well as southern, central and western Arizona.

 

As part of his specialization in southwestern ceramics, Alex has researched pottery of the prehistoric Hohokam, Patayan, Anasazi, Mogollon, Jornada-Mogollon, and the Sinagua cultures as well as the historic Native American ceramics. Alex has published more than 20 technical reports on excavations, surveys, ceramic analyses, and has presented research results at numerous archeological conferences. He also enjoys contributing to OCA publications with his artifact and feature illustrations. In addition to his OCA projects, Alex is currently working on the report for the Chamisal Site excavations conducted by the late Kit Sargeant of Los Ranchos de Albuquerque.
