We announce an opening for the position of Chair of the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at the University of New Mexico to begin between January and August 2008. Candidates who have a strong record of achievement in research and teaching who are interested in leading a moderately sized, emerging department to the next level are invited to apply. Although not required, a strong record of administration in a top quality department of chemistry, biochemistry, or chemical biology would be evaluated favorably. In addition, academicians who have recently terminated their research program but would like to continue work in administration are encouraged to apply. Candidates must have a PhD degree in Chemistry or a closely related field and must have earned tenure and promotion to the rank of Professor at a research university. Preferred qualifications include: (1) a record of outstanding, externally funded, graduate student oriented and nationally competitive, academic research in chemistry, chemical biology, or a closely related field that has resulted in national and international recognition, and (2) an excellent record of teaching in chemistry, chemical biology or a closely related area, at the undergraduate and graduate levels and 3) An excellent record of administration in a top quality department of chemistry, biochemistry, or chemical biology, and the ability to lead the Department to the next level of achievement. The Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology is located on the same campus as the University Medical School , and it is in close proximity to the Los Alamos and Sandia National Laboratories. Situated in the heart of Albuquerque (population 0.5 million), the University of New Mexico features a beautiful campus that captures the culture of the Southwest. The sunny, dry climate and moderate temperatures coupled with mountainous landscape provide an enchanting environment. Candidates who desire to continue a modest level of research activities while serving in this position should also include a statement of their research requirements.
