UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO, Albuquerque, NM. Assistant Professor, probationary position leading to a tenure decision, beginning August 2008. AOS: Ethics. Customary undergraduate and graduate teaching duties, including thesis supervision, and non-teaching duties in Philosophy (the home department). Some of the faculty member’s teaching and service responsibilities will be in UNM’s Combined BAMD Program (http://hsc.unm.edu/som/combinedbamd/index.shtml), in particular the teaching of a capstone seminar in medical ethics. The department welcomes candidates from all major philosophical traditions. We are looking for an outstanding scholar who combines excellence in a chosen field of study with intellectual breadth and curiosity, and who will enjoy working in a philosophically diverse department. Summer teaching may be available. Salary competitive.

Minimum qualifications: Minimum requirements are a Ph. D. in philosophy or a related field, in hand by the time of appointment (or equivalent terminal degree, for those with degrees from foreign universities).  Preference will be given to candidates with: a Ph. D. in philosophy from a university with a strong doctoral program in philosophy; a research specialization in medical ethics or ethical theory; teaching experience in philosophy; a strong Ph. D. dissertation; the ability to teach graduate and undergraduate courses in philosophy, especially in the above areas; the ability to direct M. A. theses and Ph. D. dissertations; papers presented at professional meetings; publications in philosophy journals; focused research program with potential success; intellectual breadth and curiosity; interest in working with colleagues of diverse backgrounds and methodologies.
