The Department of Political Science at the University of New Mexico (UNM), in partnership with the University's Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) Center for Health Policy, invites applications for an open rank (Assistant, Associate or Full Professor) faculty appointment in Public Policy/American Politics/ Health Politics beginning Fall 2008 or Spring 2009.

The Department of Political Science employs 15 full-time faculty and maintains a small but highly competitive and nationally recognized graduate program (MA and Ph.D.), as well as a high quality undergraduate major (BA).  UNM is a Carnegie Doctoral/ Research-Extensive University and US/DE Minority public university. As the state’s largest university, UNM serves a diverse student population of over 44,000 at its main campus and Health Sciences Center in Albuquerque.

The RWJF Center for Health Policy aims to increase the number of Hispanic and Native American PhD graduates in the social sciences with expertise in health policy. According to the Center’s mission, these graduates will participate as leaders in achieving progressive changes in US health policies at the national level.  In January 2007, RWJF awarded renewable funding of $18.5 million for the first five years. The Center serves as a resource for national health policy research and will provide a voice for Hispanics, Native Americans, and other underrepresented groups in health policy discussions. In its educational and research goals, the Center fosters collaboration among the social science departments in the College of Arts and Sciences (Political Science, Sociology, and Economics) and in the Health Sciences Center.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. A doctoral degree in Political Science or related discipline by August 2008
  2. prior teaching experience
  3. demonstrated research in health politics and/or policy

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
The successful candidate will be a scholar chosen on the basis of strength and breadth of performance, according to the following:

  1. demonstrated excellence in conducting theoretically significant, empirical  research congruent with the missions of the Department of Political Science (http://polisci.unm.edu/) and the RWJ Center (http://rwjf.unm.edu);
  2. demonstrated or potential excellence in teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in health politics and policy;
  3. strong methodological expertise;
  4. the capacity to add to the intellectual breadth of the department;
  5. specialization in either American Politics or Public Policy subfields;
  6. the ability to supervise graduate students in studies leading to the doctoral degree in political science with a focus on health politics and policy; and
  7. demonstrated or potential expertise in generating external research funding.
  8. Strong background in research-related health politics and policy pertinent to Hispanic/Latino and/or Native American populations or other populations experiencing health disparities
