Associate Professor of Acting and Directing
ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF ACTING AND DIRECTING: The University of New Mexico, Department of Theatre and Dance, invites applications for an Associate Professor position in Acting and Directing beginning in August 2008. This is a probationary appointment leading to a tenure decision. Salary: $51,000.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Service: The successful candidate will be a team member in further development of the undergraduate Acting and Directing curriculums in a comprehensive BA degree collaborating with the Department’s Dramatic Writing MFA and Theatre Education and Outreach MA programs; mentor and coach acting and directing students, serve on graduate thesis committees, serve as a member of various departmental and college committees.
Teaching: Expected to teach three courses per semester at the undergraduate and graduate level including: upper division acting and directing classes on a rotating basis such as Principles of Directing, Acting- Classical Styles, Acting-Modern Styles, Physical Theatre, Acting for Camera, Entering the Profession and Topics in Directing.
Artistic/Scholarly Activity: Direct at least one mainstage show in the department’s production season annually; artistic mentoring of student directors; continued professional activity.
Minimum Qualifications:
• MFA in Acting or Directing
• 5 years of university teaching of acting and directing or equivalent professional experience
• Significant directing experience in academic and/or professional theatre
• Two years experience in physical theatre
• Two years experience in interdisciplinary collaboration; working with the classics; and various approaches to directing new work.
Preferred Qualifications:
• More than 5 years of university teaching of acting and directing
• Evidence of successful work with students of diverse ethnic and economic backgrounds.
• Extensive professional and/or academic directing experience with ongoing connections to national or international professional networks.
• more than two years physical theatre experience with an innovative physical theatre practice and a proficiency in using more than one of the following: Grotowski, Boal, Viewpoints, Clowning, Suzuki, Mask Work or other comparable traditions.
• Proficiency (more than two years) in interdisciplinary collaboration; working with the classics; and using various approaches to developing new work. Examples might include, but are not limited to, more than one of the following: dance, film, new technologies, community-based theatre.
