PROVOST/EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT FOR ACADEMIC AFFAIRS
The University of New Mexico seeks applications and nominations for the position of Provost/Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs. UNM is the flagship research University of the State of New Mexico and one of the state’s largest employers, with over 19,000 employees statewide. UNM is a doctoral granting research institution with a comprehensive health sciences center. On its main campus in Albuquerque, a city of more than 700,000 people, it enrolls over 26,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students with another 6,000 students attending branch campuses throughout the state. UNM alumni number more than 110,000 worldwide.
UNM has eleven schools and colleges: the Anderson Schools of Management, Architecture and Planning, Arts and Sciences, Education, Engineering, Fine Arts, Law, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and University College (undergraduate studies).
The University ranks among the top 50 public universities in annual research expenditures. UNM is designated as a "minority serving" and "Hispanic serving" university by the U.S. Department of Education. It is the only university in New Mexico designated by the Carnegie Foundation as a Very High Research University (VHRU). UNM also takes great pride in being the only VHRU with more than 40% underrepresented minorities in the student body, with more than 30% Hispanics and 12% Native Americans.
The Provost/Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs works directly with the President and the Board of Regents as one of the Executive Vice Presidents of the University and is responsible for providing leadership in achieving the University’s education, research, and public service missions. As the chief academic officer, the Provost/Executive Vice President provides administrative leadership to the Vice Presidents of Research, Enrollment Management, Institutional Diversity, Student Affairs, and all the units of Academic Affairs including schools and colleges, University Libraries, and research units. This person works closely with the Executive Vice President for Health Sciences on interdisciplinary issues and programs involving Main Campus programs and the University’s School of Medicine, and Colleges of Nursing, and Pharmacy, as well as, the Executive Vice President for Administration on financial, facilities, planning, and information technology matters. The Provost also works with the Vice President for Athletics through the athletic academic support programs.
Responsibilities include developing and articulating the University’s vision, planning, and budgeting for achieving academic distinction in undergraduate, graduate and professional academic programs, research, diversity, public service, and student affairs.
Minimum qualifications include a doctorate or terminal degree and academic credentials sufficient to engender respect from the academy and the community-at-large; experience in increasingly responsible positions in academic administration including successful experience as a Dean or equivalent high-level university executive experience; distinguished record of academic accomplishment in teaching and research/scholarship sufficient to merit appointment to a full professorship in an academic discipline. Two preferred qualifications that particularly are critical to success in this position are:
- The intellectual breadth and vision sufficient to understand and adapt to the changes impacting higher education in the twenty-first century, and to capitalize on UNM’s particular strengths and the unique opportunities offered by the state and region.
- A demonstrated record of successful leadership that promotes diversity in areas such as faculty and student recruitment and retention, and evidence of effective interaction with multiple constituencies in a culturally and economically diverse community.
