The Professional Development Certificate
in Instructional Technology

Overview

The Organizational Learning and Instructional Technology Program of the University of New Mexico, USA, offers an innovative, online Professional Development Certificate in Instructional Technology, which develops the knowledge and skills to craft effective solutions to instructional challenges, including the design and development of instructional materials and learning environments using the latest educational and information technologies.

Developed using the latest Internet-based technologies by a respected graduate program, the Instructional Technology Certificate is accessible entirely online (with optional face-to-face meetings). There is no requirement for campus residency to complete these courses.

This program provides a 12-hour graduate-level experience that prepares participants to effectively integrate and routinely use current technologies, and qualifies them for instructional design responsibilities in public, private, government, and educational contexts. The program emphasizes a learner-centered, outcome-oriented, interactive approach to online learning, where participants engage in hands-on activities and work collaboratively on complex, authentic projects to develop products for immediate, practical use in the work environment.

The following are the four OLIT courses required for this Certificate:

  • OLIT 505. Contemporary Instructional Technologies: Survey (3)
This is an overview of contemporary instructional technologies and how they can be utilized to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of instruction. Students will gain expertise in selecting and using appropriate instructional technologies.
  • OLIT 522. Digital Video Techniques for Instruction (3)
This course provides resources and guidance as students conceive, design, script, shoot and edit digital video footage. Students will learn to create instructional video sequences based on theories of learning and instructional design principles.
  • OLIT 525. Instructional Multimedia (3)
This course is an introduction to the instructional use of multimedia. Concentration is upon educational and psychological foundations of selecting and combining different presentation modes of information. Practical application is devoted to hands-on design and production of computer-generated graphics, sound, and video.
  • OLIT 533. Instructional Use of Computer Simulations (3)
Students will review Shareware, public domain and complex interactive commercial simulations. We explore theory and survey recent literature. Project activity will focus on design issues and simulations, as students design a simulation and develop its prototype.

Taking Online Courses

Learners access primary content and instruction from WebCT using a variety of tools including email, chat, discussion boards, web pages, and multimedia technologies. Specific technologies employed will vary by course and instructor. Depending on the teaching style of the instructor and the course content, instruction can take place synchronously (all participants in the course log in at the same time) or asynchronously (participants log in and participate as their schedule permits), or some combination of the above.

Check the online course listings for specific information at http://online.unm.edu.

Online courses follow the regular UNM course schedule.

UNM online courses are not open-ended and have set start and end dates. Most follow 8- and 16-week formats with learning activities scheduled on a weekly basis. All UNM admission and registration deadlines, policies, and procedures apply to students who participate in online courses. Online courses appear on your transcript in the same way as campus-based courses.
