Dr. Elena Barberà

Former Visiting Professor

Dr. Elena Barberà is from the Open University of Catalonia, Barcelona, Spain. During her time at UNM, her OLIT faculty mentors were Dr. Deb La Pointe and Dr. Lani Gunawardena.

Dr. Elena Barberà received her Ph. D. in Psychology in 1995 and the extraordinary award for her doctorate from the University of Barcelona, in Spain. She is currently involved with the Department of Psychology and Education Studies at the Open University of Catalonia, Barcelona, Spain, and is a teacher co-ordinator in the Educational Psychology area. She also holds an adjunct instructor appointment with Nova Southeastern University, Florida, USA for doctoral studies on Instructional Technology and Distance Education.

She is the research leader of the group EDUS (Distance Education in Universities and Schools) and her research activity is focused on assessment, learning strategies and processes of teaching and learning in virtual contexts. She has published many books and some of them are:

  • Open and Distance Education. (2006)
  • The Education in the Net. (2004)
  • To Educate in Virtual Classrooms. (2004)
  • The Enigma of Distance Education. (2001)
  • Assessment of Teaching, Assessment of Learning. (1999)

While she was a visiting scholar in the OLIT program from June to September, 2007, Dr. Barberà collaborated on three international research projects related to eLearning focusing on learner satisfaction, interaction, and webicons, and began laying the foundation for collaboration between her institution in Spain and the OLIT program at UNM to share future online courses. She contributed to the OLIT program by guest lecturing in OLIT classes and advising students who were working on international eLearning projects.
