Seung IL Na, Ph.D. is a visiting professor in OLIT during his sabbatical year 2007-2008, from Seoul National University (SNU), Seoul, Korea. He is a full professor of Vocational Education and Workforce Development program at SNU. He served as the Department Chair as well as the Director of the Center for Vocational Educator Development. Dr. Na received his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University in 1993, and worked as an assistant professor at Ohio State University prior to returning to Korea. He also worked as an assistant professor and chair of the Practical Arts Education Department at Daegu National University of Education in Korea. He has taught teaching methods and workplace learning, quantitative and qualitative research methods, workforce development administration and policy, and vocational teacher education.
In Korea, he has served on policy advisory committees as a policy reviewer and developer for vocational education and training and workforce development, for the government, public, and private institutions. He has obtained over 85 research grants as well as policy development projects from organizations such as the Korean Research Foundation, Ministry of Education, Korea Service of HRD, Ministry of Labor, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, provincial offices of education, community colleges and universities.
He has written many books which include: Understanding and Practices of Vocational Education Practicum (2003), Theories and Practices of Career Education (1999), and A Guide for Effective Teaching in Colleges and Universities (2004). He has published over hundred articles, reports, and presentations in the field of vocational education and workforce development domestically and internationally.
Dr. Na’s OLIT faculty mentors are Dr. Bruce Noll and Dr. Patricia Boverie. He has been researching his selected topics such as key competency based modular programs, and the OLIT 2+2 program, as well as refreshing his knowledge in organizational learning, HRD, career technical education, college teaching and administration, qualitative research methodology, and online course management. In addition, he has translated Dr. Boverie’s book entitled, Transforming Work: The Five Keys to Achieving Trust, Commitment, and Passion in the Workplace into Korean. He attended the 7th International Transformative Learning Conference in Albuquerque, and the National Career and Technical Education Convention and Career Expo, in Las Vegas.
He has contributed to the OLIT program by guest lecturing in graduate courses and helping students write dissertation proposals. He has participated in OLIT faculty meetings and interacted with faculty on his research interests. He is considering collaboration possibilities between UNM and SNU for the mutual benefit of students and faculty.
